Running is more than begrudgingly lacing up and going out to run a few laps to burn calories. There is so much more to running than that and there’s many reasons to start in 2016! Here are some reasons to start running that you can share with someone who’s unsure about starting!
Running gives you a community, it builds friendships.
There are so many wonderful people that I met in 2015 that I would have never met if it wasn’t for running. 2 of the 5 runners in the photo below don’t even live in Toronto but I’m in almost constant contact with those two fellas because of our love for running. Runners are some of the most supportive people I’ve ever met and there are runners from the online community that I text/Facebook message daily.
There are times where I have to tackle something big. I’d feel nervous, I’d feel doubtful of the outcome, and I’d be unsure of myself. However, running reminds I that I can face them all by just taking one step at a time. By focusing only on the current moment like I do when running intervals, long runs, hard runs, etc, the mental strengthen I gain from running transfers to tackling every day struggles.

Running helps lower the pressure
According to the Mayo Clinic: “Regular physical activity — at least 30 minutes most days of the week — can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg)… The best types of exercise for lowering blood pressure include walking, jogging, cycling, swimming or dancing.”
Running gives you the time you need
Running allows me to disconnect from the internet (when I’m not on Instagram haha),
avoid take a break from phone calls and emails, and gives me time to myself. Because I usually run alone, running gives me daily blocks of time where I can pretty much not worry about anything and have some “me” time.
So tell me, what are some reasons that you run? Anyone in your life recently started running?
