Sometimes you just have to call it quits.

Today I was scheduled to do 14k-16k. I ended up doing 2k. Yesterday was supposed to be my rest day but due to missing my Thursday run, I tried to make it up (and went twice as hard than I should of). So naturally, when I woke up today for my long run, my body was just not feeling it. However, sometimes it’s just mind over matter so I laced up and went out! And let me tell you, 30 seconds in, my body was telling me it wasn’t mind over matter issue. My legs were heavy, the area right above my ankles were feeling pain, my back was aching, and I was out of breath. I needed a rest day. A year ago, I would have just toughed it out and kept going but now, I knew better. It was not worth aggregating my shin splints and not worth the risk of injury. So I called it quits. I’m not proud I called it quits but I’m proud that I finally found my line that I would not cross. Maybe I’ll give it another try tonight :/

Did you do a Sunday long run today? Do you prefer to push through tough runs or do you scale back?

  1. I made myself get up to 10 miles, today. I ran 13.1 back at the beginning of the month, then hurt my back the morning of my 7.5 mile race. Haven’t run that far since, so I needed to hit 10 to feel confident about my upcoming half marathon. So glad that run is OVER.

Way to listen to your body, Carmy. It’s hard to do!

    • Good job! I’ve been slowly trying to build my mileage back up but it’s so hard when your mind thinks you can run it when your body says you can’t. When’s your upcoming half?
