Tuesday on the Run – Race Recovery

Welcome to Tuesdays on the Run hosted by Patty from My No-Guilt Life, Erika from MCM Mama Runs and April from Run the Great Wide Somewhere.  This week, the topic is Race Recovery and since I had recently raced, I just thought I’d share my two cents!

Okay so where do I start? I do quite a lot for recovery post race (special drinks like Vega and Rumble, rolling, stretching, etc.) but today I want to focus on one thing that I found to be super helpful for me that I recently started doing. This year I was actually able to walk the day after and I honestly think that the reason behind it was a warm Epsom salt bath.  There are many theories behind whether this works or doesn’t work and I’ll let you Google and decided for yourself because there is honestly so many running related things are can be argued to death (ie do ice baths really help?).  Some say hot Epsom salt baths help reduces inflammation and eliminate toxins which helps to ease muscle pain whereas other sources say that it does not.  However,  I’m just here to share what works for me.

Before August 2014, I would exclusive take ice baths after hard training runs.  However, in August I was starting to feel as if it was not enough and after chatting with some runners who swore by it, I started adding in Epsom salt baths.  Immediately, I felt a difference.  Maybe it’s just the fact that the warm water helps my muscles relax or maybe the salts eliminated toxins from my body, I didn’t care because it worked and it was cheap!

After my half marathon, I immediately got home and soaked for a good 20 – 30 minutes and then took a nap afterwards.  I literally went from the bath to the bed then out to eat after a 7 hour nap.  No stretching or rolling (minus what I did directly after the race to loosen up my tight hips) compared to last year and somehow I had mobility the next day unlike my other races wen last year, I could barely move!  I know I’m not exactly Scientific America over here but hey, it worked for me and what’s the harm in taking a warm bath with some Epsom salt right?  If it doesn’t work, you got a relaxing soak out of it and you’re out a couple bucks and if it does…then you’ve got yourself a speedier recovery!

  1. I started epsom salt baths just before the marathon – they seemed to have worked as I had very little pain on marathon day (well abnormal pain that is…). I always take ice baths after hard runs. They seem to work! I experience very little DOMS now.

  2. I love epsom salt baths! I haven’t done them after a long run or a race in the last few months, but I think that was mostly because of the weather. I’ll have to go pick up some more salts on my way home today. Now that it’s cooled down again it’ll feel really nice.

  3. I do usually do ice baths, but I’m more than willing to experiment with a warm epsom salt bath because it is so much more pleasant! Thanks for linking up with us today!

  4. I prefer to take warm epsom salt baths the day before a long run…it seems to help my legs feel loose. After a tough run I do some dynamic stretching, foam rolling, food, and compression. I’ve kind of given up on ice baths…I don’t notice a huge difference and they are no fun:)

  5. I am all about the ice baths and a solid protein drink. I like to nap too after a hard effort especially if it was an early morning one! I never thought about adding epsom salt to my bath for recovery. Will have to try that!

  6. I’m a huge fan of the epsom salt bath. I always take them when I’m running back to back races and I think they make a huge difference for me.
