Creamy and delicious, Homemade Almond Milk is so easy to make. Here’s how to make almond milk at home 3 different ways!

    What is Almond Milk?

Almond milk is a plant-based milk that is made from almonds. It’s dairy-free, and usually vegan/vegetarian friendly. You can use almond milk in place of dairy milk in a 1 to 1 ratio when baking or cooking so it’s a great substitute for milk.

Why You’ll Love Making Homemade Almond Milk

    • It’s easy to make what you need: my cravings aren’t regularly scheduled. Sometimes I’m craving strawberry almond milk, sometimes I’m not. Making almond milk at home means you can make as much or as little as you need so you’ll finish it all instead of having that precious fridge space taken up by multiple bottles of almond milk.
    • You get to customize it: I love making different flavoured almond milks. Right now my go-tos have been chocolate and strawberry. You can’t go wrong with chocolate and the strawberry milk reminds me of those cafe Korean strawberry milks but without all the added sugars.

    What You’ll Need

    Equipment

You’ll need a few things to make almond milk at home. They are something to soak your almonds in (I use a measuring cup), a high power blender (I use my Vitamix), a cheesecloth or nut milk bag, and a fine mesh strainer. If you don’t want to purchase a cheesecloth or a nut milk bag, an old clean t-shirt or a linen towel works in a pinch as well.

    Ingredients

    • almonds – raw, not roasted, unsalted
    • filtered water – me and my brita filter are best buds.
    • vanilla extract – avoid artificial vanilla
    • dates, honey, or maple syrup
    • sea salt
    • cocoa powder – for chocolate almond milk
    • frozen strawberries – for strawberry almond milk

How to Make Almond Milk at Home

    • Prepare the almonds: Soak your almonds overnight in water. If you are using 1 cup almonds, be sure to have at least 2 cups water. The almonds will absorb the liquid and expand.
    • Blend everything together: drain the almonds and blend the ingredients together.
    • Strain: strain through the cheesecloth or nut milk bag (I like putting a fine mesh strainer underneath for extra support) and squeeze every last bit of liquid out of the almonds.
    • Store or serve immediately.

    FAQs

How Long Does Homemade Almond Milk Last?

Homemade almond milk lasts around 4 to 5 days. Strawberry almond milk lasts a little less than that. I would try to consume as soon as possible. To make homemade almond milk last longer, you can always freeze it and enough later. Alternatively, you can freeze it into ice cube trays so you can serve almond milk with frozen almond milk cubes.

How Do I Store Homemade Almond Milk?

I store my homemade nut milk in an airtight jar (similar to this) in the fridge. I also just put them in random mason jars I have on hand. You don’t have to get too fancy, even old pasta sauce jars will work in a pinch.

Be sure to give it a good shake before drinking as the almond milk might separate in the fridge (totally normal).

    What Almonds Do I Use?

You’ll need raw unsalted almonds. You don’t want to get the roasted salted ones. I usually just grab one of those giant bags from Costco.

How Do I Make Almond Milk Creamier?

To make your almond milk more creamy, you can just add less water to the blender.

    Is Making Almond Milk Wasteful?

Recently, I had someone tell me that they don’t make almond milk because they think it is wasteful to toss the blended up almonds after squeezing the milk out of them. Did you know you can actually use that? You can use almond meal in recipes or you can turn it into almond flour! Just make it until dried then blend it up until it is of a flour consistency.

If you want to do this but still have flavoured almond milk, blend in the cocoa powder or strawberry after you’ve strained the almonds out so it doesn’t affect it.
