    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Dinner on the table in 30 minutes or less is always a win in my book!
    • You more than likely have most of these ingredients in your kitchen. It’s one of my favorite recipes to wipe up with kitchen staples.
    • This broccoli sausage pasta keeps well and reheats wonderfully so you can whip up a double batch and use it as a meal prep throughout the week.

    Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make sausage and broccoli pasta.
    • pasta — I’m using conchiglie (pasta shells!), but you can use any smallish pasta shape, such as farfalle, orecchiette, cavatelli, fusilli, or penne.
    • oil — I use olive oil, but you can use any neutral oil, such as avocado oil.
    • Italian sausage — I use mild Italian sausage, but you can also use spicy! If you cannot find ground Italian sausage, you can buy the sausages themselves and remove the ground meat from the casing. If you cannot find sausage, you can use ground pork and just add some extra seasoning! Ground pork’s texture isn’t as coarse as Italian sausage and isn’t pre-seasoned.
    • seasoning — I use salt and onion powder but feel free to add your favorite spices.
    • garlic — the more garlic, the better!
    • broccoli — I cut three broccoli crowns into bite-sized florets. It makes for approximately 4 cups.
    • vegetable broth — I use vegetable broth, but you can also use chicken or beef broth. Use whatever you have on hand!
    • butter — a bit of butter to help deglaze the pot and add some richness to the pasta.
    • parmesan — feel free to be as generous as you’d like with the parmesan!

How to Make Sausage and Broccoli Pasta

Set of two photos showing sausage cooked in a skillet and broccoli florets added.
    • Cook pasta as directed on the package and reserve a cup of pasta water.
    • Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Add the ground Italian sausage, salt, and onion powder to the pan and brown the ground sausage for 5 to 6 minutes, making sure to break up the pork into small pieces.
    • Add the garlic to the skillet and cook for a minute.
    • Add a splash of broth to the skillet if the skillet needs to be deglazed. Add the broccoli florets and the vegetable broth to the skillet.
Set of two photos showing butter added to a skillet after sautéing the contents.
    • Saute for 4 to 5 minutes.
    • Add the butter and let it melt, deglazing the skillet if needed.
Set of two photos showing pasta and parmesan added to the skillet and everything tossed to combine.
    • Add the cooked pasta and parmesan to the skillet.
    • Stir until well combined and the parmesan has melted. If the pasta is dry, slowly add the pasta water, a couple of tablespoons at a time.
    • Serve with more parmesan and some basil, if desired.

    Recipe Tips and Notes

    • I like to finish the pasta off with fresh lemon for a delicious, bright flavor.
    • Want to add some heat? Use spicy Italian sausage instead of mild.
    • If using sausages, you can slice along the length of the sausage and peel off the casing.
    • This is the skillet that I’m using.
    • Swap the broccoli for cauliflower if desired.
    • While in a pinch, you can use frozen broccoli, I highly recommend using fresh broccoli as the texture is more crisp.

    Make Ahead Tips

    • Meal prep: once cooled, store the sausage and broccoli shell pasta in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the fridge.
    • Freezer: allow the pasta to cool before transferring to an airtight container and freezing for up to 3 months.
