Did you open a can of pumpkin puree and didn’t use it all up? Not sure what to do with it? Here are some easy recipes to make with leftover pumpkin puree! Get the most out of your pumpkin puree!

Not many recipes use a whole can of pumpkin puree outside of a pie or something similar. Pumpkin puree adds a ton of moisture to a recipe, so you can’t always use a whole can in one recipe! So, I almost always have leftover pumpkin puree when I open up a can (or when I make a huge batch of homemade pumpkin puree and wonder how I’ll use it up). Here are some of my favorite recipes that will help you use up your can of pumpkin puree!

How To Store Leftover Pumpkin Puree

In the fridge: you can store the homemade roasted pumpkin puree in an airtight container or jar for up to a week.

In the freezer: there are a few ways to store pumpkin puree in the freezer so you can pull out however much you need for a recipe! You can freeze pumpkin puree up to 3 to 4 months.

    • In a muffin tin: you can fill a muffin tin with half cup scoops of pumpkin puree and freeze. Once frozen, you can remove the pucks and transfer them to a freezer-friendly zip-top bag for storage in the freezer. If you’re concerned about difficulty popping out the pucks, use a silicone muffin tray.
    • In a zip-top bag: I recommend freezer-safe quart bags. You can flatten the puree so it’ll thaw quicker.
    • In an ice cube tray: If you want to freeze pumpkin puree for a smoothie or just need a tablespoon here or there, you can use an ice cube tray!

What is the Difference Between Pumpkin Puree and Pumpkin Pie Filling?

Make sure when you’re buying pumpkin puree, you’re not picking up pumpkin pie filling! At my local stores, they’re literally side-by-side on the shelves and their packaging is almost identical. These recipes use pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling. Pumpkin pie filling comes pre-spiced and sweetened!

Recipes That Use Leftover Pumpkin Puree

A mug of pumpkin spice latte with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice on top. A cinnamon stick inserted. Muffins in the background.
A glass of iced pumpkin spice latte with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spice sprinkled on top with a second glass and pumpkin muffins in the background.

Both my pumpkin spice latte and iced pumpkin spice latte use 3 tablespoons of pumpkin puree. You can skip paying $$ for a cup at the cafe and make this latte at home instead!

A jar of pumpkin overnight oats.
A jar of pumpkin chia pudding topped with pecans, yogurt, and a cinnamon stick.

This pumpkin overnight oats uses 1 cup of pumpkin puree and the pumpkin chia pudding uses ¼ cup of pumpkin puree.

A pumpkin banana muffin surrounded by some scattered chocolate chips. A cup of coffee in the back.
A profile view of a pumpkin protein muffin on a tray.

Feel like baking? Try my pumpkin banana muffins which use 1 cup of pumpkin puree. Want a bit of extra protein? Try my pumpkin protein muffins. It also uses 1 cup of puree.

Overhead view of pumpkin rice topped with green onions and a wooden spoon tucked in.
a bowl of sweet potato and pumpkin soup.

Pumpkin rice uses ½ cup of pumpkin puree and makes for a cozy, delicious side dish. It also pairs wonderfully with this sweet potato and pumpkin soup which uses 1 cup of pumpkin puree.

A nason jar of homemade pumpkin creamer.
A cup of iced cold brew with pumpkin cold foam on top.

This homemade pumpkin creamer uses 3 tablespoons of pumpkin puree to create a warm and cozy creamer that you can enjoy throughout the year. Another seasonal item you can make at home is the pumpkin cream cold brew where the pumpkin cold foam uses 3 tablespoons as well.

A plate with a pile of pumpkin protein balls.
A pumpkin pasty on crinkled brown parchment paper.

These pumpkin protein balls use ½ cup of pumpkin puree and are perfect as a mid-day snack. Pumpkin pasties also make for a great afterschool snack and use ¾ cup of pumpkin puree.

I hope these recipes help you use your can of leftover pumpkin puree! I’ll update this post as I create more recipes using pumpkin puree, so make sure to save this post and stay tuned!
