All you need are a few simple ingredients and you’ll have this herby Sourdough Croutons recipe in no time! Flavourful and crispy, these croutons are the perfect addition to salads, soups, or even as a snack. Seasoned with garlic powder, onion powder, and fresh thyme, you won’t want to buy store-bought croutons after trying your first batch.

I’ve been on a sourdough kick lately so I always have a loaf in the kitchen and I’ve been loving making these croutons. I have an air fryer version but when I want to make a large batch, then I break out the sheet pan and turn on the oven to make these amazing garlic and herbs sourdough croutons.

Why You’ll Love This Crouton Recipe

    • It’s the perfect addition to anything. While I love these croutons on soups and salads, I enjoy snacking on them as well. They’re so addictive!
    • They taste much better than the store-bought versions without a lot of effort! Their texture is amazing! The croutons are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
    • It doesn’t require a lot of ingredients to make these croutons! Most of these are pantry staples so you can whip up these croutons whenever you feel like it.

    Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make sourdough croutons.
    • sourdough bread — homemade croutons are perfect for when you have slightly stale bread hanging around the house. I love using sourdough for this recipe as it adds an extra tangy taste. Plus, sourdough is quick thick and sturdy.
    • oil — I use olive oil to crisp up the croutons but you can use any oil of your choice. Even flavoured oil!
    • seasoning — I seasoned my croutons with garlic powder and onion powder.
    • fresh herbs — I use fresh thyme but feel free to switch things around or use dried herbs instead.

    Recipe Tips and Notes

    • If you do not have sourdough bread, you can make homemade sourdough bread with French bread, challah, brioche, milk bread, or any type of bread you have on hand.
    • Make sure you spread the homemade croutons into a single layer so each crouton bake evenly.
    • If you cut your croutons into smaller pieces, you will have to keep a closer eye on them as they’ll crisp up faster.
    • Rosemary is another herb I love to toss the sourdough croutons in.
    • For more flavour, you can toss the homemade croutons with freshly grated parmesan while they’re still hot.

    Make Ahead Tips

    • Storage: once cooled, store the air fryer croutons in an airtight container for up to a week at room temperature.
