I love easy dinners where everyone can assemble their own plate. These ground turkey tostadas come together so easily, and everyone can load them up with their favorite toppings and feel satisfied. They’re perfect for busy nights when you don’t have a ton of time to cook but also don’t want to order takeout!

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • These turkey tostadas are very easy to make. They don’t take long to assemble.
    • You probably have a lot of the ingredients on hand. These are also great for using up leftover ingredients in the fridge, like a lone tomato, some lettuce, a cut onion, and more!
    • These ground turkey tostadas are so easy to customize that everyone at the dinner table is happy with what’s on their plates! Everyone can pick their own toppings, and you can also change the cheese to your favorite!

    Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make turkey tostadas.
    • oil — I use olive oil but you can use any neutral oil to cook the ground turkey.
    • ground turkey — I use ground turkey to lighten up these turkey tostadas, but you can also use ground beef, chicken, pork, or a combination.
    • onions — I use a small yellow onion.
    • garlic — the more garlic the better.
    • seasoning — I use a mild store-bought taco seasoning (or you can make my low sodium taco seasoning!) along with garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika.
    • marinara sauce — you can use homemade marinara sauce or store-bought. I always have a bit left of Rao’s that I freeze for when I just need a bit!
    • water
    • refried beans — I use canned refried beans to keep things easy peasy.
    • tortillas or tostada shells — bought these corn tostada shells but you can also use regular tortillas and simply broil them in the oven (keep your eyes on them!!) until crispy.
    • cheese — I’m using a pre-shredded Mexican cheese blend. You can use your favorite cheese. I can’t find queso fresco or cotija at my local grocery stores, so I’m using what I have access to.
    • toppings — use your favorite toppings! I use lettuce, roma tomatoes, red onions, avocado, avocados, and sour cream. Feel free to skip some of these and add your own favorites. I also like to finish the tostadas with some fresh lime juice.

    How to Make Turkey Tostadas

Set of two photos showing ground turkey cooked in a skillet then onions and garlic added.
    • Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground turkey and cook until 50% browned.
    • Add the diced onion and minced garlic and continue to cook for a minute.
Set of two photos showing seasoning and marinara sauce added to the skillet of ground meat.
    • Add the seasoning, marinara sauce, and water to the skillet.
Set of two photos showing the meat simmered and liquid cooked down in the skillet.
    • Stir until combined and lower the heat to medium-low. Let the meat simmer for up to 10 minutes or until the sauce has cooked down to your desired sauciness. You don’t want the meat to be too wet but keeping it saucy will prevent the turkey from drying out.
Set of two photos showing toasted corn tortillas added to a sheet pan and refried beans spread over top.
    • Meanwhile, reheat the refried beans in a pot or in the microwave as instructed on the can.
    • Place the tostada shells on a sheet pan and spread the warmed refried beans on them.
Set of two photos showing the sauce ground turkey meat added on top of the refried beans on the tortillas and shredded cheese added on top.
    • Spoon the cooked turkey meat on top of the refried beans and top with cheese.
    • Broil the ground turkey tostadas for 2 to 3 minutes, keeping a close eye on them, or until the cheese has melted and the shells are your desired crispiness.
    • Repeat with the rest of the ingredients. Top the finished tostadas with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

    Recipe Tips and Notes

    • This recipe makes approximately 20 turkey tostadas depending on how generous you are with the refried beans and ground turkey meat.
    • Not a fan of refried beans? Try using black or pinto beans instead.
    • You can bulk up the turkey mixture with some frozen corn, peas, and carrots as a way to sneak in veggies.

    Make Ahead Tips

When planning to make these ahead of time, there are a couple of choices. You can either cook the ground turkey ahead of time and store it in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble the tostadas. There is no need to reheat the turkey when assembling it to broil. Alternatively, you can cook and assemble everything but skip the toppings. Store them in the fridge after cooling for up to 4 days and when ready to eat, reheat in the oven and serve with the toppings. You can also freeze the ground turkey meat like you do regular taco meat.
