Making Air Fryer Onion Rings is the only way I’ll ever make my frozen onion rings again! This method of making onion rings in the air fryer makes them taste like they were deep fried but uses way less oil and is much healthier. Made straight from frozen, you’ll have the crispy onion rings in less than 10 minutes.
OK I’m sure there are plenty of recipes on how to make onion rings from scratch but this post is on how to make store bought frozen onion rings in the air fryer. Why? Because I was craving onion rings recently and saw a giant bag of frozen onion rings for $8 at the store. It’s really hard to go wrong with $8!

As I mentioned before in my air fryer tater tots post, if I can make something in the air fryer and avoid turning on my oven and moving my 100 sheet pans out of it, then it’s going into the air fryer. So I thought I’d share how to cook frozen onion rings in my air fryer since the packaging only shares how to do so in the oven.
Why You Should Make Frozen Onion Rings in the Air Fryer
- It’s so fast. Do you know how long it takes to cook frozen onion rings in the air fryer? Less than 10 minutes! The packaging on mine says it takes 15-18 minutes in a conventional oven but that doesn’t factor in the time it takes for the oven to preheat and for me to clear out all my sheet pans. So the air fryer is way faster and more efficient.
- It’s so crispy. It truly tastes like your frozen onion rings have been deep fried thanks to the air fryer. Achieving the same level of crispness in the oven takes much longer and more work. My secret? I do a second (light!) spray of oil near the end to give the onion rings an extra bump in crispness.
- It’s simple to make. You put the frozen onion rings in the air fryer, turn on the air fryer, and shake it once, then you’re done! Plus the air fryer basket is dishwasher friendly, unlike sheet pans, so it’s even easier to clean.

FAQs
I use a Philips XXL air fryer which does not require preheating. If your air fryer model requires you to preheat, you should do so for 1-3 minutes.
It’s faster to cook onion rings in the air fryer, there’s no long preheating time for the oven, and the air fryer won’t heat up the whole kitchen like an oven does! To be honest, I store a bunch of sheet pans in my oven so it’s always a production to get the oven going. So if I can make something in my air fryer, then I’m usually taking the air fryer route. It’s also much crispier as I mentioned earlier. Also, if I’m making something else in the oven and want onion rings to go alongside it, it’s easier to use the airfryer at the same time.
It’s up to you! You can put some salt on the onion rings before you air fry them. You can also season the onion rings with: garlic powder, onion powder, cajun powder, taco seasoning, sriracha lime seasoning, paprika powder, lemon pepper, etc. You can do as you wish but I usually have mine as is.
You can place leftover onion rings in the fridge and reheat them in the air fryer. Air fry them enough for them to be warmed through, around 3-5 minutes at 350F.
