You need to make this creamy caramelized onion dip with Greek yogurt for your next party or just as a weekday snack! It’s a lightened-up version of the classic French onion dip and with extra protein thanks to the Greek yogurt. Full of sweet and savory flavors, this Greek yogurt French onion dip is going to be your new favorite dip!
I love a good healthy dip. Not only is it perfect for snacking, girl-dinner, hosting, and even used as a spread, this Greek yogurt caramelized onion dip is so easy to make! The hardest part about this recipe is being patient as your onions caramelize.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Traditional French onion dip uses cream cheese, sour cream, or mayo as a base. While I love a decant and rich dip, sometimes I just want a lightened-up version, so I can eat the whole thing by myself! This onion dip uses full-fat Greek yogurt as the base, so you still get the creamy texture with the rich and tangy flavor, but it’s more nourishing and gives you a boost of protein!
- It’s so easy to make! The hardest part is caramelizing the onions and even that, it’s just hard because it takes some time.
- You probably have most of these ingredients on hand! So this is the perfect last-ish minute appetizer to whip up.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- butter & oil — I like to caramelize my onions with both butter and oil. The butter adds flavor and the olive oil keeps the butter from burning.
- onions — depending on how much onions you want in your caramelized onion dip, use 2 to 3 yellow onions.
- garlic — some minced garlic to add some extra flavor.
- Greek yogurt — you can use low-fat or regular Greek yogurt, but I prefer regular full-fat Greek yogurt as it’s richer and creamier. While regular yogurt is great, this recipe uses Greek yogurt as it is thicker, tangier, and more protein-rich than regular yogurt. It’s also higher in protein and lower in sugar.
- flavor boosters — to add extra flavor to the Greek yogurt so it’ll taste like store-bought French onion dip (but better), you’ll need Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- chives — an optional garnish to add a pop of color.
How to Make Caramelized Onion Dip with Greek Yogurt
- Heat the butter and oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the onions and sauté for 5 minutes or until the onions have softened.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for around 40 to 50 minutes. Stir the onions with a wooden spoon or spatula every few minutes or until the onions are golden brown and caramelized to your liking. Add more butter or oil as needed.
- A minute or two before you’re done, add the minced garlic and continue to cook until softened. Set aside the caramelized onions and garlic to cool.
- Add the Greek yogurt, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder to a bowl. Mix well to combine.
- Add the caramelized onions to the Greek yogurt and then mix well to combine.
- Garnish with chives if desired.
Recipe Tips and Notes
- You can dice the caramelized onions, so you get a little bit of onion with every bite. Alternatively, you can dice the onions before caramelizing them. I just prefer slicing them and having the strands in the dip.
- You can stir in some sour cream for extra tangy flavor.
- If you have time, letting the dip sit in the fridge before serving will allow the flavors to meld together, resulting in a more flavorful dip.
- If you don’t have Worcestershire sauce, you could add a splash of soy sauce instead.
Make Ahead Tips
- Meal prep: store the greek yogurt caramelized onion dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. If there is any liquid separately, simply mix it back into the dip before serving.
- Freezer: I don’t recommend freezing this dip as the texture can change when thawed.
