Wondering if you can freeze whole garlic cloves? Here’s how I freeze garlic cloves.
A while back, I shared how to freeze minced garlic, but after my most recent garlic haul, I decided I wanted to keep some cloves whole so I could be more flexible in how I can use the garlic. Here’s how I did it.
What You’ll Need to Freeze Garlic Cloves
- garlic — I always try to hit up the yearly garlic festival to get a large amount of garlic from my local farmers. This way, I have local garlic year-round!
- sheet pan — you’ll need a large sheet pan to flash freeze the garlic on.
- parchment paper — I line the sheet pan with parchment paper, so it doesn’t stick.
- freezer-safe container — you can freeze the garlic cloves in freezer-safe containers or bags. You can also use a vacuum seal if you prefer.
How To Freeze Whole Garlic Cloves
- Peel the garlic. Make sure to cut off the tough root end.
- Place the garlic in a single layer on a lined sheet pan. A little overlap is fine but avoid creating a pile on the sheet pan.
- Flash freeze the garlic cloves (covered or uncovered) for 2 to 3 hours, or until frozen. This depends on how cold you set your freezer.
- Transfer the frozen garlic cloves into a freezer-safe airtight container or bag. You can also vacuum seal them as well.
- Freeze for up to 6 months.
Recipe Tips
- To use, I either use it from frozen or let it sit out at room temperature for a bit, so it softens enough to smash or cut in half.
- I prefer to use an airtight container or bag over a vacuum seal bag as it’s easier to take out what you need with the container. However, vacuum sealing does remove the chances of freezer burn and helps it last longer.
- I like to line my sheet pan to prevent the garlic cloves from sticking to the sheet pan. It’s also easier to lift the parchment paper from the sides and quickly pour all the frozen cloves into a container.
- Don’t forget to label your container!
