Got a bunch of green onions and can’t use them all right away? Or want to have fresh green onions on hand at all time? Here’s how to freeze green onions!
Can I Freeze Green Onions?
Yes you can! I love freezing green onions. I add green onions to a ton of my recipes whether it just be on top or simmering it in a soup so I like to freeze a bunch so I can always have some on hand to add to my meals.
What You’ll Need
- green onions — as much or as little as you want.
- airtight freezer safe containers
How to Freeze Green Onions
- Rinse your green onions and trim the top and the roots off.
- Pat dry the green onions.
- Slice the green onions into rounds or angled cuts. Alternatively, cut the green onions the same length as your container if you want to use them unsliced.
- Transfer them to a freezer safe containers or small freezer bags and then freeze.
- After 2-3 hours, give the sliced green onions a stir in the container so that they’re loose and aren’t frozen in a large block. Return to the freezer until ready for use. Use from frozen.
Notes
- If you don’t want to do my freeze and stir method, you can flash freeze the sliced green onions on a lined sheet pan and then transfer the sliced green onions to a freezer safe containers or small freezer bags in the freezer.
- Frozen green onions last for around 6 months when stored properly.
- Since green onions are so easy to regrow, I save the root end that I cut off and place them in water. This way, I double my amount of green onions!
- The green onions that I don’t slice, I like to add to soups and stocks.
- Use straight from frozen. The flavour isn’t affected!
- See below how they look once frozen! As long as you pat them dry and remember to stir them, they don’t clump together.
