All you need is five minutes to make buttery toasted breadcrumbs. Crispy, crunchy, and flavorful, here’s how to toast breadcrumbs! Add them to pasta, casseroles, vegetables, and more!
If you want to take a recipe to the next level, you need to make toasted breadcrumbs! I love adding it to pasta, salads, and even vegetables to add a fun, crunchy texture to the dish. My favorite way to use these breadcrumbs is in my ground chicken parmesan recipe.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It adds a lovely texture to your meals! I love adding it to my spaghetti and mac and cheese! They’re also a great swap for croutons in salads and add a nice crunchy texture to vegetables like green beans.
- It takes five minutes or less to toast breadcrumbs! They also keep well in the fridge, so you can make a batch for the week.
- Making toasted breadcrumbs at home means you can control how you want to flavor them! I use salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning, but you can use whatever combination you’d like!
Ingredients You’ll Need

butter — some unsalted butter will help the breadcrumbs taste buttery and crisp up.
breadcrumbs — I use panko breadcrumbs. If you don’t have breadcrumbs on hand, you can make your own by pulsing stale bread in a food processor. I personally prefer sourdough if making breadcrumbs from scratch.
seasoning — kosher salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning.
How to Toast Breadcrumbs

- In a large, non-stick skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter before adding the panko breadcrumbs, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning.
- Spread the breadcrumbs in an even layer, leaving it undisturbed for 30 seconds to 1 minute before stirring.

- Spread the breadcrumbs in an even layer again, leaving it undisturbed for 30 seconds to 1 minute before stirring. Repeat again or until the breadcrumbs are toasted to a golden color.

Recipe Tips and Notes
- Spreading the breadcrumbs in an even layer will help them toast quickly and evenly, so I recommend using a large skillet. If you want to make more, you can toast the breadcrumbs in two batches or use an even larger skillet.
- You can use other seasoning such as paprika, pepper, dried thyme, dried basil, dried oregano, dried parsley, and cayenne. You can even add lemon zest or orange zest for a citrusy flavor. You can add some grated parmesan to the toasted breadcrumbs at the end as well.

Make Ahead Tips
- Meal prep: once cooled, store the toasted breadcrumbs in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the fridge.
- Freezer: allow the seasoned breadcrumbs to cool before transferring them into an airtight container before storing them in the freezer. Freeze for up to 3 months.
