All you need are four ingredients to make this jasmine milk tea recipe. It’s a classic item on any boba cafe’s menu for a good reason. It’s not just sweet and refreshing, but it’s also floral and fragrant. You’ll love this homemade version!

Want some jasmine boba but don’t want to head outside to the cafe and pay $6 to $7? Then this is for you! It’s so easy to make jasmine milk tea at home, and you don’t even need a ton of ingredients.

A glass of jasmine milk tea with tapioca with a straw.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • It’s made with simple ingredients that you can find in most grocery stores or online. If you’re near an Asian grocer, it’s even more convenient as not all grocery stores carry tapioca pearls.
    • It’s pretty quick to make. You just have to simmer the tapioca for a couple of minutes and steep the tea!
    • It’s delicious and way more budget-friendly than going to the cafe!

    Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make jasmine milk tea.
    • jasmine tea — you cannot make jasmine milk tea without jasmine tea! It’s what gives the drink its floral and fragrant flavor.
    • tapioca pearls — I use these specific ones for extra sweetness for this jasmine boba. You can use any tapioca pearls you like.
    • brown sugar syrup — I use homemade brown sugar syrup, but if you do not have any on hand, you can quickly make some with ¼ cup muscovado sugar or dark brown sugar and 40 ml water. Just simmer it with the tapioca pearls.
    • milk — for a rich and creamy milk tea, I use whole milk. However, you can use any milk, even non-dairy milk.

How to Make Jasmine Milk Tea

Set of two photos showing tea being steeped and tapioca cooked in syrup.
    • In a heat-proof glass, steep the jasmine tea in hot water for 2 to 3 minutes. You can steep it longer if you’d like a stronger tea flavor.
    • Meanwhile, prepare the tapioca pearls according to the package instructions (usually placing them in hot water for a few minutes) and then add the tapioca pearls and brown sugar syrup (or brown sugar and water) in a small saucepan and simmer it for 3 to 5 minutes. This will infuse the brown sugar flavor into the tapioca pearls.
Set of two photos showing syrup and boba added to a glass then tea poured into the glass with ice.
    • In a cup, add the brown sugar syrup and tapioca.
    • Add ice and jasmine tea to the tapioca.
Set of two photos showing milk poured into a glass and a straw added.
    • Add the milk to the tea.
    • Stir to combine and enjoy immediately.

    Recipe Tips and Notes

    • Please feel free to adjust the amount of tapioca pearls and brown sugar syrup to your liking. I prefer my boba tea to be on the sweeter side, and I love chewing on QQ pearls, so I’m all for it!
    • Feel free to double or even triple this recipe.
    • Be sure to get some boba straws, as your pearls won’t fit through regular straws!

Can you make your own boba pearls?

If you want, you can definitely make your own pearls. For a while, I made my own, but it was so time-consuming rolling every single tapioca pearl by hand that I just buy the shelf-stable ones instead. This is the one I buy.

Can I make this ahead of time?

The boba balls are best consumed immediately so I would not recommend making this in advance. When left out for too long (a couple of hours), the tapioca balls will harden.

    Can I skip ice?

You can definitely skip ice to your lychee bubble tea if you’re worried it’ll dilute the drink!

What is the difference between “Boba Tea” and “Bubble Tea?”

They’re the same thing. Boba, boba tea, bubble tea, milk tea, tapioca tea, pearl milk tea. It’s mostly a regional verbiage.

    How does jasmine tea taste?

Jasmine tea has a light floral taste.

Is there caffeine in this drink?

There is caffeine in green tea, so there is caffeine in this bubble tea.
