This lightly flavoured milk has been my new favourite way of enjoying milk in the mornings. Inspired by cold brewed tea, this Cold Brew Milk Tea is a fragrant and delicious way of enjoying milk.
A mixture between milk tea and cold brew tea, this cold brew milk tea is a refreshing way to start off the day. It’s so easy to make and all you have to do is remember to prepare it the night before!
And the best part is that if you want to turn this hojicha milk (or tea of choice), into an iced bubble tea, you can do so in a flash! Serve the milk with some ice, brown sugar syrup, and tapioca and you’ve got yourself a flavourful iced boba milk tea!
What is Hojicha?
Hojicha is a Japanese roasted green tea that is made by slowly roasting twigs and leaves of the tea plant. Hojicha has a toasted nutty taste to it as well as a smoky-sweet flavour thanks to the roasting process.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- hojicha tea leaves — you can also swap for your tea of choice. Earl grey is another tea that goes great with this method of brewing tea.
- hot water
- milk — use any dairy of your choice. I just went with a full-fat dairy milk.
How to Make Cold Brew Milk Tea
- Add the hojicha tea leaves into a large airtight mason jar. I use a 750mL mason jar.
- Add freshly boiled water to the tea. Allow the tea to brew for a minute.
- Add in the milk.
- Store the milk in the fridge overnight. The colour of the milk might change depending on the tea you use but as you can see up above, my hojicha milk tea only darkened slightly.
- When ready to enjoy, strain the tea leaves and drink as is.
Make It Into a Bubble Tea
To turn this hojicha milk tea into a bubble tea, make a brown syrup mixture by simmering dark brown sugar and water then stir in tapioca balls. Place the brown sugar syrup and boba balls at the bottom of a cup, add a handful of ice cubes, and then top off with the flavoured milk. Recipe Tips and Notes
- The ratio of water to milk is up to your preference on how milky you’d like your milk tea to be.
- For more flavour, you can serve with my hojicha ice cubes.
- I recommend enjoying the brewed milk tea within 3 days of making it for the best flavour.
- This brewed milk tea is amazing in smoothies as well! I love using it in my banana blueberry milkshakes as it adds a fragrent toasty flavour. I am obsessed.
