These matcha balls are such a delightful snack! They’re creamy, flavorful, and so easy to make. You only need a handful of ingredients to make these matcha energy balls and they come together in minutes! They’re the perfect make-ahead snack.
You may know them as energy balls, bliss balls, protein balls, or power balls, but regardless of what you want to call these, these matcha balls are such a delicious little snack that you can make with a handful of pantry staples. I love the combination of matcha and almond butter and even better, there’s no cooking required!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- They’re the perfect grab-and-go treat, as it’s so easy to just pop one in your mouth.
- They’re really simple to make. I throw everything into a food processor and blend all the ingredients together before rolling them into a ball. No cooking or baking is required!
- They’re also tasty and full of nutrients while keeping you feeling satisfied until your next meal.
Ingredients You’ll Need

- rolled oats — make sure you are using old-fashioned rolled oats and not steel-cut oats.
- chia seeds — both black and white chia seeds have the same nutritional content. The only difference is their color.
- matcha powder — a finely grounded powdered green tea, matcha is full of antioxidants and health benefits! Make sure to good good quality culinary grade or ceremonial grade matcha powder. You’ll also want a little extra for dusting the energy balls. Don’t want to do that? See my suggestions below!
- salt — a pinch of salt helps bring the flavors together.
- maple syrup — maple syrup is my preferred sweetener, but you can use your favorite one.
- almond butter — I use almond butter for my binder in these matcha energy balls but you can also use cashew butter, peanut butter, or your favorite nut butter.
How to Make Matcha Balls

- Add the rolled oats, chia seeds, matcha powder, salt, maple syrup, and almond butter to a small food processor.

- Pulse the mixture together until it resembles wet sand.
- Using a spoon or cookie scoop, scoop out some of the mixture.

- Roll the mixture into even-sized balls.

- Dust the energy balls with matcha powder if desired.
- Enjoy immediately or store in the fridge.

Recipe Tips and Notes
- If you don’t want to dust the energy balls with matcha powder, you can roll them in another topping, such as crushed pistachios, crushed almonds, coconut flakes, or hemp hearts!
- If the mixture is too crumbly, you can add a bit more almond butter and maple syrup to bind the ingredients together.
- When you store the energy balls in the fridge, after a while, the dusting of matcha will essentially be absorbed into the ball, and they won’t have that pretty green coating on them after some time.
- They won’t be as creamy when they’re straight out of the fridge due to the almond butter.

Make Ahead Tips
- Meal prep: you can store these matcha balls in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks in the fridge. However, they rarely last that long as I’m a pretty snacky person!
- Freezer: freeze the energy balls in an airtight container. You can freeze them with wax paper between them so they don’t stick together or you can flash-freeze them on a sheet pan first then transfer them, frozen, into a bag. They can last for up to 3 months.
There’s caffeine in matcha so there’s some caffeine in these energy balls.
Store your matcha at room temperature or in the fridge if you prefer. If you are storing your matcha in the fridge, be sure to bring the matcha to room temperature before using it.
If your matcha has a yellowish or brownish color to it, this usually indicates that mature leaves were used to make your matcha, making it a lower-quality matcha. This leads to your matcha tasting more bitter. Try to buy good quality matcha when possible.
