What is Sambal Oelek?
Sambal Oelek is an Indonesian chili sauce or paste that is typically made from a mixture of a variety of chili peppers. I’ve found that it’s common to find it in major grocery stores now and not just small ethnic stores. If you’ve never tried it before, I suggest starting small as it is quite spicy. I use 1 tbsp in this specific sesame noodle recipe but I’ve made it with 2 tbsp before and I was reaching for water. If you cannot find it in stores, you can get sambal oelek online.

Tips and Notes
- If you’d like to make this sesame noodles spicier, add an extra tablespoon of sambal oelek.
- If you do not have sambal oelek, you can substitute with sriracha. Sriracha is less spicy to feel free to add more.
- To make the sesame flavour stronger, you can drizzle some toasted sesame oil and toss to coat before serving.
- To make this sesame ramen noodle sweeter, you can add a drizzle of honey to the sauce or a tablespoon or two of brown sugar.
- I like to top my noodles with fried onions. They add a nice crunch to the noodles. See the image below to see what I’m referring to!
