These savoury homemade breadsticks are so soft and fluffy! Make a batch for dinner. Meal prep and freezer friendly.
Why You Should Make These Soft Breadsticks
When I used to work at a chain pizza place, we’d have these breadsticks that was made with half of the pizza dough, brushed with butter, and topped with a breadstick seasoning. We loved messing around on our own and experimenting our own versions so when I craving breadsticks recently, I was ready to dive in back to my experiments!
You’re going to love these breadsticks because they’re so soft, fluffy, and full of flavour. You can make them ahead of time or you can make them and freeze it for later! They’re also ridiculously easy to make!
What You’ll Need To Make These Breadsticks
- warm water: no more than 50C
- flour: I used bleached all purpose flour
- instant yeast
- brown sugar
- salt
- onion powder
- garlic powder
- shaved parmesan
- dried basil
You’ll also need a sheet pan, parchment paper, a stand or electric mixer as well as a greased bowl for the bread dough to rise in. I used olive oil.
For the topping, you’ll need some melted butter and breadstick seasoning or I just dust on powdered parmesan cheese with garlic powder.
How To Make Breadsticks at Home
- With a dough hook attachment in a stand mixer, mix together the warm water, flour, instant yeast, and brown sugar.
- Once combined, add in the salt, onion powder, garlic powder, shaved parmesan, and dried basil.
- Knead for 2-3 minutes before transferring the dough to a lightly greased bowl. Cover with saran wrap and let rise for 30-45 minutes or until the dough has doubled in size. It may take longer if you have a cooler kitchen. It can also be assisted by letting the dough rise in the oven with just the oven light on.
- Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the risen dough out onto it. Using your fingertips, gently push the dough into a rectangular shape and cut into 8 strips.
- Either place the strips onto a parchment lined baking sheet as is or twist each strip. Cover with saran wrap again to let rise for another 15-20 minutes.
- Heat oven to 400F and bake for 17 minutes until the bread is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven, brush some butter on top, and sprinkle on some breadstick seasoning or powdered parmesan cheese and garlic powder.
- Serve warm.
Tips and Notes
- If you do not have instant yeast, you will have to bloom your yeast.
- I use melted unsalted butter for the topping.
- This can also be turned into cinnamon sticks by not adding in the parmesan/garlic powder/onion powder/basil. Leave the breadsticks plain then bake. After, brush with butter and pop with granulated sugar and cinnamon sugar.
- Make sure your dough has doubled in the rise the time it takes varies by temperature.
- If you like tearing breadsticks, you can place them closer to each other before baking. If you want more individual breadsticks, place them further apart.
- Freezer Instructions: Allow to cool completely and place the breadsticks into a freezer safe bag for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature and reheat a little bit in oven or microwave since it tastes best warmed!
