Made in 20 minutes or less, this Jjapaguri with Steak also known as Ram-Don, popularized by the movie Parasite is a combination of two types of noodles topped with juicy bite-sized pieces of steak. It is beyond easy to make at home and is packed with flavor.

    What is Jjapaguri?

Jjapaguri (or Chapaguri) is a dish that combines Chapagetti and Neoguri together into one meal. It was popularized during an episode of MBC’s Dad! Where Are We Going? in 2013. It got so popular that Nongshim shared it on their website and created a cup noodle version of it!

In 2019, when the film Parasite was released, the dish was translated to “ram-don” for the English subtitles. Ram-don was short for Ramen-Udon as Chapagetti is a Chinese-inspired jajang ramen noodles and Neoguri features thick Udon-style noodles.

In the movie, they combine jjapaguri with steak and after seeing it eaten on screen, I immediately wanted some! It’s shockingly easy to make and after your first bite, you’ll see why ram-don is so popular.

    Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make jjapaguri with steak.
    • steak — in the movie Parasite, they use Hanwoo, a premium Korean beef to show the contrast of inexpensive instant noodles with extremely expensive beef. Since we cannot buy Hanwoo locally, we are using sirloin steak. Feel free to use whatever steak you have on hand.
    • seasoning — I season my steak with a bit of salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
    • oil and butter — I sear the steak bites with oil on a cast-iron skillet and then finish it off with some butter.
    • Chapagetti — you will need the noodles and the seasoning packets. According to Nongshim, “Chapagetti is the fusion of Spaghetti and a Chinese black soybean paste known as “Chajang”… Nongshim Chapagetti combines the taste of authentic Chajang with the ramyun noodles that we’ve all grown to love.”
    • Neoguri — you will need the noodles and the seasoning packets. Neoguri features “thick Udon-style noodles and distinct spicy seafood flavor.” Depending on your spice tolerance, you can add all the powder from the Neoguri to it or simply a portion of it.

How to Make Jjapaguri with Steak (Ram-Don)

    Cubed Steak seasoned.
Seared steak cubes in a cast iron.
    • Steak the cubed steak with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
    • In a cast-iron or large skillet, heat up the oil and add the steak to the hot pan. Sear the beef for 1 to 2 minutes per side before adding butter (if using) and baste the steak until it is done to your liking. Set the steak aside to rest as you continue to make the ram-don.
Cooked and drained noodles in a pot.
    Seasoning sprinkled over cooked noodles.
    • Meanwhile, bring a pot of water (around 4 cups) to a boil and add the noodles and vegetable flakes. Cook for 3 minutes, reserve a cup of the starchy water and strain the rest of the water out.
    • Add the seasoning packets to the noodles (add less of the Neoguri if you want it less spicy).
    Seasoning powder added to noodles.
Steak added to a pot of jjapaguri.
    • Toss the noodles with a few splashes of the reserved water, until you reach a desired thick consistency. I usually add two tablespoons at a time.
    • Add the steak to the noodles and toss to combine. Top with some scallions for garnish if desired.

    Recipe Tips and Notes

    • I like bringing the cubed steak out ahead of time so I can season it and let it come to room temperature to help with more even cooking.
    • Make sure to adjust the amount of Neoguri powder! It’s quite spicy. H likes the entire packet and I’m more of a fan of using around ¾.
    • Make sure the pan is not before adding the steak. Do not add the butter at the beginning or you end up with boiled steak!
    • Feel free to make this even fancier by adding some crushed garlic and fresh herbs to the skillet as you baste the steak.
    • You could sear the steak whole and cut it up afterward if you prefer but cubing it saves some time and you get a seared crispy exterior on every side.

    Make Ahead Tips

    • Meal prep: while best eaten immediately, you could store leftovers for a later day or make extra for lunch the next day at work. Once the noodles have cooled, store them in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the fridge.
    • Reheat: you can microwave or reheat the ram-don in a skillet on the stovetop.
