Homemade Tonkatsu Sauce is so quick and easy to make. All you need are three ingredients and you can have tonkatsu sauce in no time.
Tonkatsu sauce is surprisingly easy to make. Also called katsu sauce, it is a Japanese condiment. It tastes sweet and tangy and can be used for dipping or as a sauce for sandwiches.

Since moving, I’m no longer a short drive away from all my favourite Japanese items. So whenever I run out and I don’t feel like paying a premium at the specialty stores in my city (we usually just drive out and do a big restock every few months at a more budget-friendly store), I just make my own. The OG sauce uses a variety of vegetables and fruits but since we are making this at home, we are doing a “quick” version that does not use all the traditional ingredients.
You only need 3 simple ingredients and the flavour profile is almost exactly the same. Feel free to play around with the quantities to suit your personal tastes.
Ingredients You’ll Need

How to Make Tonkatsu Sauce at Home
- In a small bowl, whisk together all of the ingredients until combined.
- Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the fridge.

Recipes Tips and Notes
- Some recipes may call for soy sauce or sugar for extra saltiness and sweetness but I find my combination to be just fine without it. I find the oyster sauce and ketchup to be enough. Feel free to adjust to your own personal tastes.
- Storage: While the ingredients used can last up to several months in the fridge, I like to use the katsu sauce within two weeks. Be sure to store the sauce in an airtight container to ensure it tastes fresh.
What Can I Use This On?
- chicken katsu
- tonkatsu (the pork version of chicken katsu)
