Cool down with a big refreshing glass of blueberry lemonade this summer! It’s so simple but delicious and it’s always a crowd favorite. It’s also visually stunning with its vibrant hue, making for a delightful drink to bring out at summer cookouts.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It’s simple to make from scratch. After making a blueberry simple syrup from scratch, you just have to stir in lemon juice and water! Making simple syrup is simply simmering the blueberries with water and sugar, so you don’t have to be a pro in the kitchen to make this delicious lemonade!
- It’s the perfect balance of sweet and tangy. It’s such a refreshing drink, and you will definitely want a second glass.
- I love making homemade blueberry lemonade because it can be adjusted as I’d like. Sometimes I’m craving a sweeter drink, and other times I’m craving a more tart drink. It’s very easy to adjust it to suit my cravings.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- blueberry simple syrup — I use my homemade blueberry simple syrup recipe. It’s easily made by simmering a cup of blueberries with a cup of sugar and a cup of water.
- lemon juice — fresh lemon juice is key. Freshly juiced lemon tastes more bright, tart, and fresh compared to bottled lemon juice.
- cold filtered water — my trusty Brita is always full in the fridge!
- extra blueberries and lemon slices and ice — I like to serve my blueberry lemonade with extra sliced lemons, blueberries, and ice.
How to Make Blueberry Lemonade
- If you do not have blueberry syrup on hand, start by making that by combining 1 cup of blueberries, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 cup of water. Simmer for 10 minutes, mashing the blueberries as you stir. Strain the blueberry skins from the syrup.
- Juice the lemons until you have 2 cups worth of lemon juice (approximately 5 to 6 lemons).
- Add the blueberries and lemon slices to a pitcher.
- Add the blueberry syrup, lemon juice, and 3 cups of water to the pitcher.
- Stir and let the blueberry lemonade chill in the fridge until ready to enjoy. Serve with ice if desired.
Recipe Tips and Notes
- If you have frozen blueberries or lemon slices, you can use that in place of ice! This way, the lemonade is not diluted and you get the extra blueberry and lemon flavor when you take a sip.
- I do not add the ice to the pitcher until ready to serve to prevent the ice from diluting the lemonade. I usually add the ice directly into the cups.
- Room temperature lemons are easier to juice than lemons straight from the fridge. You can also roll the lemons under your palm on your kitchen counter to loosen up the juices in the lemons.
- You can use sparkling water to make this blueberry lemonade bubbly! I have a SodaStream and love using it for lemonade. If you are using sparkling water, you should chill the blueberry syrup and lemon juice mixture without it and only add the sparkling water until ready to serve so it doesn’t go flat.
- You can turn this into a cocktail by adding your alcohol of choice.
Make Ahead Tips
- Make ahead: You can make the blueberry syrup ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container. You can also make the basil lavender lemonade 3 days ahead of time and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge. Do not add ice.
- Freezer: You can freeze blueberry lemonade in ice cube trays for another day.
