Here’s how to cut romaine lettuce for a salad. Here are simple step by step photos to show you how!

If you’re looking for a way to cut romaine lettuce (also known as cos lettuce) quickly and easily for salads, this is how you do it! When making salad, I like everything to be bite sized so it’s important for me to dice them all up evenly. It can be confusing at first glance since a head of romaine lettuce looks kind of odd but here’s how to cut your romaine lettuce into salad-ready pieces.

I have a handful of salad recipes coming up and thought it’d be easier to make a post sharing how to cut romaine lettuce for it instead of explaining it in every single post. Hopefully you find this helpful!

    FAQs

Do you wash the lettuce before or after?

You can do either. I like to wash my lettuce beforehand and then do a quick rinse after. If you have a salad spinner, it’s much easier to wash and dry after you’ve diced up your romaine lettuce.

    Is romaine lettuce healthy?

Don’t mistake romaine lettuce for iceberg lettuce. While iceberg lettuce isn’t nutritionally dense, romaine lettuce has vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, and folate, and more.

How do I store romaine lettuce?

Before cutting: Before cutting my romaine lettuce, I leave it in the package it came in inside of my crisper drawer in the fridge. I try to use it within the week.
After cutting: After cutting up my lettuce, I place them in a vented container inside of the fridge. Add in a paper towel to absorb any excessive moisture.

How do I pick the best romaine lettuce?

At the store, the romaine lettuce should be fresh and crisp. Avoid any with limp or wilted leaves or leaves with yellowed edges.
