Instant Pot Chicken Teriyaki
Hello my friends! Today I’m back with another Instant Pot recipe. This week, I’m sharing with you my Instant Pot Chicken Teriyaki recipe. I’m so in love with the sauce and honestly, I did not want to share this with H at all. I had to make sure he didn’t eat my share that I had packed up for work as he had eaten his container in the middle of the night!
Luckily, this chicken teriyaki instant pot recipe is so easy to make that a new batch can be whipped up the next day for dinner. Trust me, this easy Instant Pot Teriyaki Chicken recipe will quickly become a family favourite.

What You’ll Need To Make This Instant Pot Chicken Teriyaki
- water or stock
- low sodium soy sauce – regular soy sauce will be too salty with this. if you do not have the low sodium one, I suggest adding less.
- honey
- red chili flakes – 1 tbsp goes a long way. Cut this amount down by half if you don’t handle spice well.
- rice vinegar
- mirin: mirin is a Japanese sweet rice wine, if you are unable to find it, you can try extra rice vinegar with extra honey
- soy sauce paste: if you do not have soy sauce paste, add more soy sauce and touch more honey – soy sauce paste is thicker than regular soy sauce and sweeter
- garlic
- chicken breasts
- cornstarch
How To Make Teriyaki Chicken in the Instant Pot
- In your Instant Pot add your water/stock, soy sauce, honey, red chili flakes, rice vinegar, mirin, soy sauce paste, and garlic. Mix it throughly.
- Add in your chicken breast to the Instant Pot.
- Put your Instant Pot lid on and turn the knob to seal and press your pressure/manual button. Set it for 6 minutes then let it NPR (Natural Pressure Release) for 10 minutes before QR (Quick Release).
- Remove the chicken to shred.
- Press the sauté button on your Instant Pot, add in a cornstarch slurry, and let the sauce cook down a little (1 tbsp water, 1 tbsp cornstarch) and to thicken it your sauce. 1-2 minutes is enough as the sauce continues to thicken as it cools.
- Serve with your side of choice (and garnish if you wish, I used green onions).
Note: this recipe was only tested in the Instant Pot Duo 6 Qt 9 in 1 and have not tested this chicken teriyaki recipe in a different sized Instant Pot. Please ensure that there is enough liquid in your IP for it come up to pressure.
What To Serve this Instant Pot Chicken Teriyaki With / Make it into a Chicken Teriyaki Meal Prep
I served mine with rice and mixed vegetables (broccoli, carrots, snap peas) that I made while the chicken was cooking in the Instant Pot. You can toss some vegetables into the sauce, before thickening and cook under pressure for 0-1 minute to steam the veggies in the sauce or just close the lid with the pot under “warm” and let the pot sit for 5-6 minutes to soften the vegetables!
Other ideas that goes well with chicken teriyaki are…
- quinoa
- brown rice
- cauliflower rice
- baby bok choy
- bell peppers
- mushrooms
- asparagus
- chow mein
- use it like you would pulled pork and make it into a sandwich or add it into a taco
Tips and Notes
- If you want to make your vegetables in your Instant Pot as well, you can put your broccoli/carrot/peas mix into the Instant Pot and set it to manual 1 minute high then quick release for an easy steamed vegetable mix.
- To meal prep: I packed my shredded Instant Pot teriyaki chicken with rice and steamed vegetables in an airtight containers. They can be meal prepped in the fridge for up to 4-5 days.
- Make this into a dump and go freezer Instant Pot recipe: in a freezer bag, add your chicken breasts and sauce. Once ready to make, either thaw it overnight in the fridge or cook it straight from frozen in the Instant Pot. It shouldn’t require much adjustment in the time other than it will take longer to come up to pressure if cooking from frozen.
- To double this recipe: if you want to double this Instant Pot chicken breast teriyaki recipe, this sauce don’t need to be doubled, nor does the time. Just add an additional 2 chicken breasts. The suggested cook time for chicken breasts in the Instant Pot is 6 minutes per pound. If you want to triple the recipe, you’ll have to double the sauce.
- While I personally don’t find this Instant Pot chicken teriyaki to be spicy, I’ve had some friends tell me that they found this chicken teriyaki on the spicer side. Half the red chili pepper flakes to decrease the heat.
