Need to hit your protein goal for the day and want a sweet treat? This protein hot chocolate will check all the boxes!

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • This homemade hot chocolate with protein powder costs a fraction of a bag of store-bought version. It’s also much easier to control how sweet you prefer your hot chocolate by making it yourself as some pre-made protein hot chocolates already have the sugar mixed into the powder.
    • It’s so easy to make protein hot chocolate at home! It takes 5 minutes or less. You can also whip this up in the microwave if you don’t want dirty a pot.
    • It’s the perfect drink to cozy up to in the winter or if you’re craving a sweet treat after a workout. As a runner, I’m definitely leaning towards a toasty hot chocolate with protein after a run out in the cold than a cold protein shake!

    Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make protein hot chocolate.
    • milk — you can use any milk of your choice, from cow’s milk to non-dairy milk such as chocolate oat milk, cashew milk, or almond milk. You can even get high protein milk where you get 13 grams of protein per cup. Keep in mind that the type of milk you use will affect the protein count. Also, I usually use whole milk as it provides you with the creamiest hot chocolate.
    • cocoa powder — cocoa or cacao powder will both work in this protein hot chocolate recipe, just make sure you look for an unsweetened version! You can also add more than I do for an even richer chocolate flavor. I do recommend you try to get a good quality cocoa powder for the best flavor.
    • chocolate protein powder — I use 100% Whey Chocolate Protein use your favorite protein powder! Try to use a good quality protein powder as the hot chocolate flavor will not mask the flavor if you’re not a fan of the powder.
    • maple syrup — I sweeten the hot chocolate with maple syrup. Make sure you use real maple syrup and not pancake syrup.
    • vanilla extract — a splash of real vanilla extract will add a nice layer of flavor.
    • salt — a pinch of salt will help balance out the flavors. Don’t go overboard with the salt! A pinch is enough to help brings out the natural sweetness of the chocolate and enhances its flavor.

    • Gently whisk in the cocoa powder, chocolate protein powder, maple syrup, and vanilla extract until combined.

    • Taste and add additional maple syrup if desired.
    • Pour into a mug or heat-safe glass and serve immediately, topped with your favorite toppings.

    Recipe Tips and Notes

    • For a richer, more luxurious drink, you can use real chocolate (either dark or milk) chopped into small pieces in place of cocoa powder. It’ll take a little longer to melt the chocolate into the milk.
    • For a holiday twist in flavor, try adding a pinch of nutmeg or cloves to the hot chocolate. You can also replace the vanilla extract for peppermint extract, or crush a a candy cane and sprinkle that on top.
    • When heating the milk, make sure to not have the temperature too high to avoid boiling it. Overheating and burning the milk will cause it to taste bitter. I rather take a little longer making the hot chocolate than burn the milk!
    • If you’re having a hard time mixing the powders into the milk, you can use a handheld milk frother to help everything blend together.
    • Make sure you are whisking continuously to avoid any clumps!

    Make Ahead Tips

    • I highly recommend enjoying this high protein hot chocolate immediately after making it. However, if you’d like to “meal prep” this recipe, you can always combine the cocoa powder, protein powder, and salt in a small jar or container so it’s ready to add to the milk with maple syrup and vanilla extract when you’re done your workout or for when you’re craving it!
    • If you have leftovers, let your hot chocolate cool to room temperature, then cover it so it’s air tight and store in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat on the stovetop over low heat or in the microwave. Hot chocolate can separate during storage, so make sure to whisk everything back together while reheating.

How to Make High Protein Hot Chocolate in a Microwave

Add everything to a microwave-safe mug or container and microwave the mixture on high for 1 to 2 minutes or until the hot chocolate is hot. However, make sure to stop and stir in 30 seconds intervals. Be careful while doing this!

    Total Time: 5 minutes mins
    Servings: 2 servings

    Ingredients

    • 3 cups milk, or non-dairy milk of choice
    • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 2 scoops chocolate protein powder
    • 2 tablespoon maple syrup
    • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
    • Pinch salt

    Instructions

    • Heat the milk in a small pot over medium-low heat until it's gently simmering.
    • Gently whisk in the cocoa powder, chocolate protein powder, maple syrup, and vanilla extract until combined.
    • Taste and add additional maple syrup if desired.
    • Pour into a mug or heat-safe glass and serve immediately, topped with your favorite toppings.

    Notes

    • Generally, a scoop of protein powder contains around 25 to 30 grams or 2 to 3 tablespoons. I usually use the scoop that comes with my protein powder. 1 scoop tends to be one serving of protein according to the bag and this recipe uses 2 scoops to make 2 servings of hot chocolate.
