Shrimp with Homemade Sweet and Spicy Chili Sauce Meal Prep
When it comes down to seafood, shrimp is on the top of the list of my and H’s favourite. We love eating shrimp so it’s only natural that shrimp makes it way into my weekly meal prep routine.
This recipe was originally inspired by what some restaurants call bang bang shrimp crossed with a sweet thai chili shrimp. However, bang bang shrimp tends to have a hefty amount of mayo mixed in and the store-bought thai sauce has a ton of white sugar and preservatives. So this homemade sweet and spicy chili shrimp meal prep was born!
Wild Caught Argentinian Shrimp
For this sweet and spicy chili shrimp meal prep recipe, I used Marina Del Rey‘s Wild Caught Argentinian Shrimp. I went with Marina Del Rey’s Wild Caught Argentinian Shrimp because they have this delicious natural sweetness to them that pairs really well with the flavours I’ve picked for this recipe.
In addition to being a delicious choice, being wild caught, the shrimp is free from added antibiotics, hormones, and dye. One of my resolutions this year is to keep a more careful eye on what I’m consuming so I’ve been picking the wild shrimp over a farmed shrimp. Bonus: they have a peeled and deveined version of their Argentinian shrimp (the one I’m using!) which makes meal prepping much faster!
How To Make Homemade Sweet and Spicy Thai Chili Sauce
Last year I’ve been working on making more sauces from scratch. I’ve found that it helps me save money (since most of what I need is already in my pantry) and it helps me avoid buying a bottle of sauce, using 2-3 tbsp, then letting it sit in the fridge for 6 months. Here’s how I make my version of Sweet and Spicy Thai Chili Sauce.
There will be enough sauce left to store in the fridge for later use, if you plan on also covering the noodles with the sauce as well and do not want leftover sauce, you can use this recipe in half.
What You’ll Need:
- 1/2 cup rice vinegar
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup honey
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 5-7 cloves of garlic, minced/chopped finely
- 4-5 Thai chilis, seeds removed, chopped
- 2 tsp red pepper flakes
- 1 tbsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water to make a slurry
How To Make the Sauce:
- In a small pot, add all your ingredients expect for the cornstarch slurry and bring it to a boil. Let the mixture simmer for 7-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add in the cornstarch slurry and continue to let the mixture simmer until it has thickened. The sauce will continue to thicken once it’s cooling so be sure to not let it cook down too much.
- Store in an airtight container and in the fridge once it has cooled down.
How To Make This Sweet and Spicy Thai Shrimp Meal Prep
- Following the instructions on the bag of the shrimp, I soaked the shrimp in cold water for ten minutes and then let it drain in a colander for two minutes.
- Tip: I soaked my shrimp in the bag itself to save myself from washing an extra bowl.
- While the shrimp was soaking and draining, I cooked my stir-fry noodles. I used 3 minute chow mein noodles (3 minutes to cook in boiling water). In a large hot pan, added a tbsp of oil, a tbsp of soy sauce, and stir fried it along with some spiralized carrots.
- Optional: you can also stir fry the noodles in the sweet and spicy thai chili sauce as well to add more heat to the overall dish.
- Once the noodles are done and set aside, I added the sweet and spicy thai chili sauce into the hot pan and placed my shrimp into the pan. Careful not to overcrowd the pan. Sauté the shrimp until pink and opaque.
- Serve the shrimp together with the noodles and a side of green beans if desired. Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

You and I have the same mission, to save money and refrigerator space by not having a hundred bottles of sauces. If I buy a bottle of sauce, it usually goes bad before I use it all. Learning to make my own sauces was a game changer for me. Thanks for this recipe, I really appreciate not having to buy a bottle of sauce I may not use again. The shrimp is a fantastic idea by the way, my hubby favorite dinner. Definitely going to make this.

Amen to avoiding buying a bottle of sauce, using 1/100th of it and then having it in the fridge for years! :) Your sweet and spicy Thai sauce sounds delicious, thank you for sharing!

Oh my gosh. I feel like I always have a bottle of sweet chili sauce in our fridge that I know we will never finish. So, thank you for sharing an easy recipe for homemade! It sounds delicious!

I really like Argentinean red shrimp! They’ve got great flavour, texture, and size, and they represent a really wonderful alternative to some of the ethically and environmental questionable shrimp that saturate the market. Your sauce is fantastic, and I love how simple it is to put together, yet full of flavour. I never buy bottled sauces so I’m always on the lookout for a good scratch-made sauce, and this definitely fits the bill. All in all, another great meal-prep meal – and a wonderful way to get busy people cooking!

YES! Ditch the bottle and make your own! Not only is it just fun but it’s also so great knowing that YOU know what’s in it – preservative and all that extra sugar free! Love a great meal prep like this!

I love a good meal prep idea and this looks spectacular! That sauce is spicy perfection with gr garlic and red pepper flakes!! Can’t wait to give this one a try!

I love sweet and spicy shrimp! Even better when the chili sauce is homemade. It’s amazing how different (and better!) condiments taste when you make them from scratch. It’s hard to go back to store-bought! This is such a healthy spin on a restaurant fave. I’ll be the first to admit I love me some bang bang shrimp—but the calories are no joke. This is the perfect way to sate that craving without feeling bad about it.

I think you read my mind with this meal! I could, and usually do, live on Asian inspired recipes, especially when noodles are involved. It’s so easy to prepare a protein, a sauce, and the noodles…and they do make the perfect meal prep. I always have every ingredient too, so we’ve got a real winner here. Thanks for sharing!
