This earl grey syrup comes together with 3 simple ingredients and is so easy to make! Perfect for adding to lattes, teas, cocktails, sodas, or drizzled over pancakes, waffles, ice cream, and more!

I love the sweet, floral notes paired with the bold, full-bodied, and malty black tea flavor of earl grey. It’s so good and turning earl grey tea into a simple syrup has been such a delightfully delicious addition to my morning coffees and matchas.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • It’s very easy to make this earl grey tea syrup recipe. Steep the tea and then simmer it with sugar! Easy peasy.
    • You more than likely have the ingredients in your kitchen. It’s definitely more convenient to make a small-batch of this earl grey simple syrup than ordering a large bottle online and waiting for it to arrive.
    • I love how flavorful it is. You can also adjust how you’d like it to taste by swapping the dark brown sugar for light brown sugar or steeping the tea for longer or shorter, depending on how strong you’d like the syrup to taste of earl grey.

    Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make earl grey syrup.

earl grey tea — you can use loose leaf or a bag. I recommend using good-quality tea as some tea bags do not use whole tea leaves but use small broken leaves and tea dust. For ease, I’m using tea bags.

sugar — I use simple white granulated sugar. Nothing fancy! You can also use brown sugar if you want a deeper caramel taste.

water — you’ll need hot water to steep the earl grey in.

    • To a small pot, add hot boiled water and four tea bags. Steep the earl grey tea bags for 4 to 5 minutes.
    • Discard the tea bags and add the sugar to the pot.
    • Simmer, uncovered, for 15 to 20 minutes, making sure to stir until the sugar has completely dissolved.
    • Let the syrup cool to room temperature and transfer to an airtight container before storing in the fridge or using.

    Recipe Tips and Notes

    • If it gets too thick for your liking, you can stir a teaspoon of water at a time into the syrup until it’s at your desired consistency. Simple syrup tends to be runny but if simmered for too long, it will start thickening as the water evaporates.
    • Make sure to lower the heat to simmer once the syrup reaches a boil. You don’t want too much water to evaporate.
    • If you want some caramel notes in your earl grey simple syrup, you can swap white sugar for brown sugar.

    Storage Tips

    • Once cooled, store the earl grey syrup in an airtight mason jar or syrup bottle for up to 2 weeks in the fridge.

Ways to Use Earl Grey Syrup

    • to sweeten a latte
    • add to sparkling water to make earl grey-flavored soda
    • add to a london fog
    • add it to matcha
    • combine it with lemonade
    • use it in my earl grey iced tea in place of regular simple syrup
    • simmer it with the tapioca and pair it with my earl grey milk tea
    • add to your favorite cocktails or mocktails
    • make cold foam with it
    • add it to frosting or icing
    • drizzle it over a cake, pancakes, waffles, or french toast
