Freezer Chicken Burritos are super handy to have in the freezer. Meal prep these lazy chicken burritos this weekend!
freezer friendly chicken burritos
There’s just something about a burrito that just hits the spot for me. When I got home from Japan to an empty fridge and freezer, I pretty much ate everything on the Chipotle menu that was just conveniently across the street from where I worked. Well, their burritos definitely hit the spot but it also hit my wallet at the same time.
So this is where these freezer chicken burritos come in! I’m stocking up my freezer with these bad boys so I’m not caught off guard again. These freezer friendly burritos are my “base” recipe. Most of the ingredients are pantry staples and freeze well so I don’t have to worry about running up the bill when making a large batch of these. I love making a batch for the week and then a 2nd and 3rd batch of these chicken burritos for the freezer since they don’t take a lot of effort to put together.
These freezer friendly chicken burritos are also perfect if you have leftovers since I tend to have shredded chicken meal prepped in general and there’s always half an onion just hanging out in the fridge! If you have little helpers, you can make a game out of it with stations that they can each help with!
What’ll you’ll need to make meal prep freezer chicken burritos
- large soft tortillas
- shredded chicken
- rice (I used this lemon garlic rice recipe)
- corn
- red onion
- shredded cheese
- navy beans
It’s up to you on how you want your chicken to be seasoned. I simply baked chicken with sweet paprika, garlic powder, and a pinch of salt for this chicken burrito.
How To Make These Freezer Friendly Chicken Burritos
- In a large tortilla, place your rice in the middle first before the rest of your toppings.
- Next, fold the bottom of your tortilla up so it covers the ingredients but not to the top of the tortilla.
- Fold in the sides before rolling the burrito in.
- If freezing, wrap them individually in saran wrap or parchment paper so they do not stick together before storing it in the freezer.
Note: here is a series of gifs from HuffPost on how to roll a burrito if my instructions are unclear!
How To Reheat Frozen Burritos
- From frozen: reheat burritos in the microwave for about 3 minutes, wrapped in a damp paper towel to avoid it from drying out or for 15-20 minutes in a 400 degree oven.
- From the fridge: defrost in the fridge the night before and microwave for 1.5 minutes.
Tips and Notes about Making Frozen Chicken Burritos
- I do not recommend putting in any sour cream/guac/etc into the burrito before freezing as they do not reheat well. Serve it on the side after the burritos are reheated if you desire.
- I would also skip greens (ie lettuce, cilantro) as they do not reheat well.
- Your microwave’s settings may be different from mine so I recommend that on first re-heat, to try a lower 2-3 minutes first to see if it’s fully reheated instead of going to 4 directly. Mine reheats it in 4 minutes but yours may not!
- The ingredient amount is not set in stone! Adjust it as you please – you may want more chicken or more cheese and less onions, etc. Make it something that you’ll look forward to eating :)
Change it up! Other fillings you can put in your freezer chicken burrito
- Change up the chicken by using any of these 5 chicken marinades!
- Other cheese blends
- Other beans (ie black, pinto, etc)
- Other bell peppers or spicy peppers
- Crispy bacon
- Chickpeas

I absolutely love that you can prep these burritos ahead for the freezer! I’ve been looking for new recipes that freeze and reheat well, because sometimes, life gets so busy that cooking from scratch for dinner just doesn’t get done. It’s such a great way to use leftover rotisserie chicken breasts, too. I always seem to have a rotisserie chicken hanging out in my fridge, waiting for the perfect repurposing!
