Full of fibre and protein, you're going to want to add wild rice to your meals! Here's how to cook wild rice perfectly on the stovetop!

    What Is Wild Rice?

Wild rice isn’t technically “rice,” but they’re actually a grass! Wild rice is the seed of an aquatic grass that is usually found in Canada in shallow waters of small lakes and slow-flowing streams.

There is True Wild Rice and Cultivated Wild Rice – True Wild Rice is growth and harvested in the wild whereas Cultivated Wild Rice is grown under regulated conditions in man-made paddies. Due to true wild rice being harvested by hand out in the wild, it tends to be a little more expensive and general supermarkets tend to carry the cultivated version. It is up to you to which you prefer to purchase.

    How To Cook Wild Rice

    How does Wild Rice Taste?

The long black and brown grains may be a little odd visually but I promise they’re quite tasty! Wild rice has a nutty, earthy flavour to it and a distinctly chewy texture. The texture of the rice also depends on how long you cook it for – some prefer wild rice is be cooked and eaten just before the rice bursts/splits but I prefer to cook mine til some of the rice bursts/splits.

Do You Have To Soak Or Rinse Wild Rice Before Cooking?

I rinse my wild rice before cooking just like I do with all my rice, however soaking it is not required. If you choose to soak the wild rice, soaking it for 15 minutes can cut the cooking time down in half, but the wild rice will be much softer and less textured than if it was not soaked.

What You’ll Need To Make Wild Rice

    • wild rice (make sure it is pure wild rice and not a wild rice blend which includes brown rice)
    • chicken stock (or water or vegetable stock)
    • salt

What You'll Need To Make Wild Rice

    How To Cook Wild Rice

    • Place wild rice, stock, and salt in a saucepan with a lid on over medium-high heat.
    • Bring it to a boil before turning the heat down to low and letting it simmer for 35-40 minutes.
    • Once some of the wild rice has split, it is ready. Drain any excess water if needed before serving.

How To Freeze Wild Rice / How to Make Wild Rice Ahead of Time

    • Freeze the rice in an airtight container for up to 6 months if you do not plan on using it within 5 days of cooking.
    • I pre-portion 1 cup servings so I can just defrost what I need.
