Freezer Steak Burritos are super handy to have in the freezer. Meal prep these lazy steak burritos this weekend!
Freezer Friendly Steak Burritos
Recently I talked about how I made freezer chicken burritos because I Chipotle was taking all my money when I came back from my trip to an empty fridge. Well, I’m back with another freezer burrito – steak version! These freezer friendly burritos are my “base” recipe. Most of the ingredients are pantry staples and freeze well so I don’t have to worry about running up the bill when making a large batch of these. I love making a batch for the week and then a 2nd and 3rd batch of these chicken burritos for the freezer since they don’t take a lot of effort to put together.
To make this steak burrito a little closer to the Chipotle version, I marinaded my steak in Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce for an hour. You can marinade this up to 24 hours in the fridge for maximum flavour if you aren’t in a rush.
WHAT’LL YOU’LL NEED TO MAKE MEAL PREP FREEZER STEAK BURRITOS
- large soft tortillas
- steak, cubed
- rice (I used this lemon garlic rice recipe)
- corn
- red onion
- shredded cheese
- navy beans
HOW TO MAKE THESE FREEZER FRIENDLY STEAK BURRITOS
- In a large tortilla, place your rice in the middle first before the rest of your toppings.
- Next, fold the bottom of your tortilla up so it covers the ingredients but not to the top of the tortilla.
- Fold in the sides before rolling the burrito in.
- If freezing, wrap them individually in saran wrap or parchment paper so they do not stick together before storing it in the freezer.
Note: here is a series of gifs from HuffPost on how to roll a burrito if my instructions are unclear!
HOW TO REHEAT FROZEN BURRITOS
- From frozen: reheat burritos in the microwave for about 3 minutes, wrapped in a damp paper towel to avoid it from drying out or for 15-20 minutes in a 400 degree oven.
- From the fridge: defrost in the fridge the night before and microwave for 1.5 minutes.
TIPS AND NOTES ABOUT MAKING FROZEN STEAK BURRITOS
- I do not recommend putting in any sour cream/guac/etc into the burrito before freezing as they do not reheat well. Serve it on the side after the burritos are reheated if you desire.
- I would also skip greens (ie lettuce, cilantro) as they do not reheat well.
- Your microwave’s settings may be different from mine so I recommend that on first re-heat, to try a lower 2-3 minutes first to see if it’s fully reheated instead of going to 4 directly. Mine reheats it in 4 minutes but yours may not!
- The ingredient amount is not set in stone! Adjust it as you please – you may want more chicken or more cheese and less onions, etc. Make it something that you’ll look forward to eating 🙂
- I marinaded my steak in Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce for an hour before bringing it to room temperature and searing and cooking it in a cast iron with butter and olive oil.
- If you don’t want to freeze them in a plastic baggy, the burritos fit perfectly into rectangular meal prep containers as well!
CHANGE IT UP! OTHER FILLINGS YOU CAN PUT IN YOUR FREEZER STEAK BURRITO
- Use another cheese blends
- Or another beans (ie black, pinto, etc)
- Add other bell peppers or spicy peppers
- Crispy bacon
- Chickpeas
