This 4 ingredient simple version of an iced brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso comes together in minutes! While I love going to a coffee shop, I also love getting my caffeine fix before leaving the house. You can make this homemade frothy coffee in your PJs in the comfort of your home without breaking the bank.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • You can make this Starbuck copycat with only 4 simple ingredients at home!
    • It’s super easy to make so you can whip it up in minutes.
    • A grande iced brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso comes $6.45 at my local SB, $7.29 after tax. While I love ordering it as a little sweet treat for myself after Sunday long runs, I can’t justify paying that regularly. Making a brown sugar shaken espresso at home is much more in line with my monthly coffee budget.
    • You can easily customize the ingredients! Want it sweeter, stronger, etc? An easy change! Want to add a sweet cream cold foam? No extra charge!

    Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients needed to make a homemade iced brown sugar oat milk shaken espresso.

espresso — I use vanilla Nespresso pods, but you can brew a strong coffee or use instant espresso. Starbucks uses Veranda Blend, but feel free to use what you have on hand.

brown sugar — you can make my homemade brown sugar syrup with only three ingredients if you have the time, but to keep things quick and simple, I’m using just brown sugar for this recipe. I prefer dark brown sugar if you have that on hand. Regular brown sugar works, too!

oat milk — since it’s an oat latte, I use oat milk, but you can use any milk, from almond milk to cows milk. If you have the time, you can easily make oat milk at home with just some rolled oats! You can also whip up my homemade almond milk recipe which uses soaked raw almonds!

ice — you 100% need ice to make this shaken espresso. Putting hot espresso in a shaker or jar without any ice will cause pressure buildup due to the steam. You do not want to do that! The ice will also chill the espresso for your drink.

cinnamon — this is optional if you’d like to add a dash of it to the top of your.

vanilla extract — it’s also optional to add a splash of vanilla extract if you’d like.

How to Make an Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso

    • Prepare your coffee using the method of your choice.
    • Stir the brown sugar into the espresso while still hot to dissolve.
    • In a mason jar (or cocktail shaker), add the espresso and ice.

    • Close the lid and shake vigorously for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
    • Pour into a tall glass, including the ice. Top up with oat milk and top with a dash of cinnamon if desired.

    Recipe Tips and Notes

    • Instead of ice, freeze extra coffee in an ice tray to make coffee ice cubes with brewed coffee and use it in the drink to avoid it getting watered down! I do this with my matcha often to keep my matcha latte from being watery!
    • Make this stronger by using less milk and increasing the espresso.
    • If you don’t have a machine to make espresso, you can also use pre-made cold brew, homemade cold brew, or instant espresso.
    • I don’t recommend making this ahead of time as you should enjoy this drink freshly shaken.
    • A shaken espresso has one more shot of espresso in it than a regular latte. However, making it at home, you can use two shots only or use all three. It’s up to you!
    • If you’re not a fan of having ice cubes in your drink, you can strain the drink into your glass so the ice cubes don’t go into the glass. You must shake the drink with ice.

Is the brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso sweet?

The brown sugar makes this drink sweet. You can make it sweeter or less sweet by adjusting the amount of brown sugar added to the drink.

Do I need a cocktail shaker to make this recipe?

While the baristas have a shaker to shake their espresso, you can use a mason jar at home!

Why do I have to shake the espresso?

Shaking espresso with ice incorporates the flavors of the brown sugar, creates a frothy consistency, and chills the drink. The aeration, dilution, and chilling of the espresso gives its a light smooth flavor.
