I am obsessed with roasted garlic. It’s deliciously sweet with a mellow, nutty, and rich flavor that makes my mouth water the second I smell it. Don’t believe my obsession? Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Roasted garlic butter is so easy to make! You can roast garlic in the oven or roast garlic in the air fryer, then simply combine it with butter!
- It’s SO good. I’m obsessed with spreading this roasted garlic butter on freshly toasted bread and just eating it as is.
- Making it at home, you can add as much roasted garlic as you’d like to your butter compared to store-bought garlic butter.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- butter — I’m using a 250g block of unsalted butter. I use unsalted butter, so I’m able to add as much or as little salt to it as I’d like. If you only have salted butter, you can skip adding the salt.
- garlic — I use two bulbs of garlic but feel free to add more!! I personally think locally grown garlic is more flavorful and think you should buy it locally whenever possible!
- oil — you need some oil to roast the garlic.
- salt — use as much salt as you’d like. Skip the salt if you only have salted butter.
- chives — I like adding some chives to really elevate the butter, so it’s more similar to what you’d get at a restaurant.
How to Make Roasted Garlic Butter
- Heat the oven to 400F.
- Remove the paper-thin skin of the garlic.
- Trim the top ¼ inch off the top of the garlic bulb. Place the heads of garlic onto a piece of tin foil and drizzle with olive oil and a pinch of salt.
- Tightly wrap the garlic in the foil. Roast in the oven for 40 to 60 minutes or air fry for 20 to 25 minutes. When cool to the touch, remove the garlic cloves from the skin by squeezing the cloves out or simply peeling the skin off.
- Add the butter, roasted garlic, salt, and chives to a small bowl.
- Mix until well combined. Store in the fridge in an airtight container or rolled in a log wrapped in plastic until ready to use.
Recipe Tips and Notes
- If you’re not a fan of chives or want to use additional herbs, fresh parsley, rosemary, thyme, or basil make for a delicious addition.
- To tell when the butter has softened to room temperature when you press into the butter with your finger, it should leave an indent. You don’t want the butter to be too soft, or it’ll be greasy.
- If your kitchen is on the cooler side, you can cut the butter into smaller pieces to speed up the butter getting to room temperature quicker.
Storage Tips
- Fridge: just like regular butter, this garlic compound butter keeps in the fridge for a couple of weeks. I keep mine in an airtight container to keep them fresh.
- Freezer: I keep mine in my Souper Cubes in the freeze for a couple of months (up to 3), but if you use an ice tray without an airtight lid, transfer them to an airtight container before storing them in the freezer. Alternatively, check out my how to freeze butter post.
Ways to Use Roasted Garlic Butter
You can use this homemade roasted garlic butter anywhere you’d use regular butter, so the sky’s the limit! Here are a few suggestions:
- spread it on bread: this is PERFECT for garlic bread. This butter pairs deliciously with my homemade no knead bread, soft bread sticks, milk bread rolls, focaccia, air fryer bagels, or cheddar cheese buns.
- serve it over steak: butter and steak go hand in hand. Check out my garlic butter steak, steak and potatoes foil packs, and steak bowl.
- add it over veggies: make veggies taste 100x better by adding a knob of roasted garlic butter to this! Try my foil pack potatoes, pan fried brussels sprouts, sautéed peas, grilled corn on the cob, hasselback potatoes air fryer, air fryer asparagus or roasted asparagus, sautéed corn and shallots, and roasted frozen vegetables.
